Flying 400 miles inland to Guilin in Communist China as the only two Caucasians onboard the plane led to what was possibly the most exciting and stimulating trip I have ever experienced.
Landing in pitch black on an airport runway lit only with bonfires, not being met by the government-mandated guide, and riding several miles in the dark with a taxi driver that wouldn't use his headlights
because they were too hard to replace, was only the start of a fantastic experience.
I'll always remember the little old wrinkled, unsmiling, immigration guard, standing next to a huge machine-gun-toting soldier at the airport, whose grim expression was suddenly broken with a huge toothless smile
as he stroked his hairless chin and pointed at my beard with nods of approval and a cackle of unintelligible Chinese.
