Aruba is a rocky, desert-like, Dutch owned island in the south Caribbean about 18 miles off the coast of Venezuela.
In 1992, we rented a jeep and drove most of the length of the island, oftren on unimproved roads and had a good time "exploring"
the back country before settling in on a beach for the afternoon.
Aruba seemed like it was on the verge of rapid change when we first visited in 1992, and, by 2011, there had been significant changes due to an agressive expansion of tourism.
In 2011, we limited most of our visit to exploring Oranjestad on foot.
There is a nice warm windy climate on Aruba and beach activities can be nice.
Unfortunately, either the island had very little local culture or there has been only a small attempt to preserve and display it.
Quite often, it has the feel of a destination resort rather than a living culture.
