Hallstatt (Halstadt), a World Heritage town, is laid out like a ribbon along the foot of a mountain and is the ultimate picture postcard.
Motor vehicles are almost non-existent in town and, on our first visit, the one-lane tunnel access was controlled by a street light.
The salt mines that once made it important can still be visited by trail or tramway. This is high on our list of favorite places to visit.
