travel europe greece athens the acropolis the parthenon
ARCHITECTS: IKTINOS, CALLICRATES (447-432 BC)

The Parthenon is a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena and, like other Periclean monuments on the Acropolis, was seen as a celebration of Hellenic victory of the Persian invaders.
The Parthenon is considered as a symbol of Ancient Greece, Athenian democracy, and Western civilization.
It has served as a treasury, a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a mosque, and an Ottoman ammunition dump which resulted in an explosion which severely damaged the structure and its sculptures.
