travel italy tuscany florence florence cathedral - santa margarita del fiore

ARCHITECTS: ARNOLFO DI CAMBIO, FILIPPO BRUNELLESCHI (Dome) (1296-1436)

The Florence Cathedral, Santa Margarita del Fiore (Saint Mary of the Flower), was begun in 1296 in Gothic style.
The cathedral was structurally completed in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Bruinelleschi.
The exterior is faced with polychrome marble panels in shades of green, pink, and white.
I found the structure, combined with the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile, to be a beautiful and powerful complex.

The original facade by Arnolfo di Cambio was completed in only its lower portions and was dismantled in 1587-1588.
A competition for a new facade was surrounded by scandal.
A 1864 competition for a new design was won by Emilio De Fabris in 1871 and work began in 1876.
A series of niches contain statues of the twelve Apostles and, in the middle, the Madonna with Child.

They are adorned with scenes from the life of the Madonna.
The pediment above the door contains a half-relief of Mary enthroned holding a flowered scepter by Tito Sarrocchi.
