travel united states alaska whittier anton anderson memorial tunnel
Whittier is isolated from the Seward Highway and Anchorage by a ring of snow clad mountains.
The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, at two-and-a-half miles, is the longest railroad-hiway tunnel in North America.
The tunnel is one lane wide which it shares with the train tracks.
The tunnel is only open to one-way traffic at a time... the direction alternates every half hour.
