ARCHITECT: ALFRED PREIS (1962)

The USS Arizona Memorial is located in Pearl Harbor in Honolulu where the USS Arizona went down on December 7, 1941 with the Japanese attack.
1,102 sailors of the 1177 men who died on the Arizona are entombed here.
The Memorial was built in 1962 from a design by Honolulu architect, Alfred Preis, an Austrian native who had been detained at Sand Island at the start of the war because of his ancestry.
We visited the Memorial in both 1983 and 2019... in 1983 we went inside... in 2019, because of damage to the dock area, we were not allowed out of the navy tender that just circled it.
There is not a lot to see from the tour boat, but it still sends a powerful message about the men that perished there.
